January 25, 1856

A Baptist Church, numbering thirty members, organized in this city on Saturday last —Rev. R. Newton officiating.

 

Carmichael and Jamison have “broke” for more convenient quarters. They are now occupying the new brick building north of the Courthouse.

 

Mrs. Patrick, the mother of S.G. Patrick, Esq., was severely burned in a fire at Dixon.

 

Married on the 17th inst. in this city by Elder L.S. Wallace, Mr. Joseph Coddington and Miss Susan Frymire, all of Warren Co.

February 8

Saturday was a very cold day—thermometer varying some 10 degrees below zero. Mr. Wm. B. Smith of Berwick, his step-son-in-law and grandson started to come to Monmouth. On account of the suffering of the boy, Mr. Smith got out to go on foot, the team going ahead. His body was later found and all efforts to revive him failed. He was between 60-70 years of age.

Died at Rochester, Peoria Co. on 18th ult., Mr. Finney Hart in the 70th year of his age.

 

Died at his residence 2½ miles north of Galesburg, on 5th ult., Mr. Francis McDonough in the 85th year of his age.

Willard Keys, Administrator of estate of Ebenezer T. Warren, deceased, as a result of decree in Adams Co. Court will sell real estate in Warren Co.

 

F. Ogden will sell or rent brick store in Berwick, lately occupied by John R. Porter.

 

On 13th the body of Sam. W. Bradley, farmer, residing near French Creek, was found lying in the road 1½ miles north of the house of Mr. Bramble near Brinfield, Peoria Co. He was buried at Brimfield. He was supposed to have met his death by horses having run away and jerking him from the wagon. He was in his 53d year and left behind a wife. From The Knoxville Journal.

 

Last Sat., a son of John Dockstader of the town of Turtle, a lad about 15 years old, was caught in a threshing machine. He lived only a few hours after the accident. From The Beloit Journal.

May 30, 1856

Died in this city on 26th inst. of consumption, Harriet J. wife of Rev. R. Newton, aged 34 years.

 

Died at Green Bush on 8th inst., in 87th year of his age, Eli Ragon, father of Dr. B. Ragon of Green Bush. Mr. Ragon was born in Virginia on July 30th 1778 and was married to Rebecca Stewart at the age of 25, who is yet living. They moved at an early day into Ohio, where they remained until a few years ago. He served in the War of 1812. He was a man loved by every person that became acquainted with him. He was a Christian, a good husband and father. He leaves a wife and five sons to mourn his loss.

 

Died in this city on Wednesday last, Mrs. Mary Stanley, wife of Mr. Emanuel Stanley, aged 33 years. Painesville Telegraph please copy.

 

June 6

Mr. Alonzo Grover met with a serious accident last week while tending upon a corn sheller which caught his right arm and broke it in three places.

 

Mr. Champion Miller, a colored man, who was some time since soliciting aid of the citizens in this section to purchase his wife from slavery, called at our office yesterday morning and informed us that he has just returned from Missouri with his family and will remain in the city for a short time at least. The price asked for his wife was $800.

Mr. Samuel Claycomb got caught in the machinery at his saw mill and his arm was broken in two places. He was carried around the shaft some twenty times before the steam could be cut of.

 

Pardee Butler from Atchison Co. Kansas writes friends and relatives in Warren Co. about the Kansas troubles.

July 4, 1856

July 11

On the 28th three young girls named Acker, Wilson and Merrit were run over by a passenger train while walking on the track of the Erie road near Stockbridge. The two first were killed; the latter badly wounded.

 

Mr. S. Shepard provided copies of personal letters received from Oregon Territory. Several persons from the area had enlisted to fight the Indians, one of whom, Mr. Edmund Shepard, had his horse wounded and another, Mr. A.B. Holcomb had a ball shot through his coat. The Captain (Hembree) of the company was killed.

 

July 18, 1856

On 25th of June, Mrs. Clark Glen and child, of Centre Point were killed by lightning. Details. From the Knoxville Journal.

Mr. Benjamin Coultas of Winchester Ill. was critically injured when his horses attached to a McCormick Reaper became frightened and attempted to run. Mr. Coultas’ son was riding one the horses and when Mr. Coultas tried to stop it, he was thrown down in front on the machine. There is little hope of his recovery.

 

Henry K. Strong had his leg nearly cut off with a mowing machine. Wm. Pool was accidentally shot at Buffalo Grove yesterday. From the Dixon Telegraph.

August 15

A fire broke out at Rock Island and destroyed a block of buildings on River Street including E.T. Sawyer’s warehouse, Philleo and Powars’ Commission House and the lumber yard of Capt. Cook.

Dr. W.C. Overstreet has returned from Missouri and has formed a medical co-partnership with his brother, Dr. J.M. Overstreet.

 

The circuit court was adjourned on Wed. in consequence of a death in the family of Judge Thompson.

 

Died near this city on 12th inst. John Cunningham Chalmers, infant son of John and Hannah Chalmers, of congestive cholera infantum, aged 13 months.

Died in this city on 14th inst. after a lingering illness, Mr. Robert Grant, one of the oldest citizens of this place. Mr. Grant was born in Washington Co. Pennsylvania in the year 1792 and removed to Greene Co. Ohio in 1814 and to Illinois in 1824. He united with the Presbyterian church in 1815 and for the last 16 years was a Ruling Elder in that Church.

 

Died 5 miles north of the city on the 21st inst., Mrs. Elizabeth Struthers wife of Wm. Struthers, Sr., late of Greene Co. Ohio, aged about 60. Xenia papers please copy.

Died in this city on 18th inst., Mrs. Martha A. Mauck in the 67th year of her age. Mrs. Mauck was a native of Bristol county, Massachusetts. She removed at an early age to New York; and after sojourning successively in Kentucky and Indiana, removed to Illinois in 1836. She made a profession of religion in 1815 and connected herself to the Presbyterian faith.

Died at the residence of Wm. L. Jones, Esq., in Asbury, Ill. October 23d. after a short and painful illness, Mr. Norman Buck, in the 34th year of his age. His remains were brought to this County for interment, where he leaves a bereaved widow and children.

 

Died at McGregor, Iowa October 25th, Lillian L. daughter of Jos. J. and Miriam A. Baugh, aged ly, 10m, 12d.

 

November 21, 1856

John E. Murphy writes from Independence, Polk Co. Oregon Territory to publish notice of Major Butler’s illness and death. Butler departed this life June 24th 1856 of typhoid fever, occasioned (as is supposed) by fatigue and exposure. He was born in Pulaska[sic] Co. KY March 7, 1789 and was in the 68th year of his age. He married in Barren Co. KY on July 25th A.D. 1811 Rachel Murphy who now survives him. He moved to Illinois in 1829, served as Captain in the Black Hawk War, (he also served in the War of 1812) and emigrated to Oregon in 1853. “Brother Butler united with the Baptist Church in Kentucky, united with the Christian church” in Illinois and died a worthy member of Luckimute Church in Oregon Territory. Details of illness.

        Murphy also reported that Joseph Davidson died on 18th of June of typhoid fever at the home of his grandfather, E. Davidson. Joseph was the son of Wm. Davidson, former husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Lucas, living near Monmouth. Joseph was engaged to be married at the time of his death.

Died on 12th October at Spring Grove while on a visit to his son, Adam Gerlaugh of Dayton, Ohio with enterie fever, aged nearly 70 years. The deceased was born in Washington Co. Maryland and was a man of unexampled integrity and moral honesty, industrious and orderly in his habits, breathing a true philosophy in all his deportment through life, benevolent and philanthropic in every noble enterprise.

Married on 8th in this city at the Mansion House by Rev. J. Soule, Mr. R.T. Graham of Monmouth and Miss Rebecca Bell of Allegheny City.

 

Died on Tues. last of typhoid fever, Mrs. Rebecca Page, aged 41y; also on the same day Rebecca Jane, aged 11, wife and daughter of Mr. A.B. Page of this county. Details of illness. Both were interred in the city cemetery during one of the severest rain storms witnessed this season.

 

December 19. 1856

Details of the trial of William Crozier charged with killing John and Henry Fleming. Verdict of Inquest Jury: that the Flemings came to their deaths at the Baldwin House in Monmouth on 11 December 1856 between the hours of 1:00-2:00 p.m. by a wound inflicted by a dirk knife in the hands of William Crozier. Jury: J.G. Madden, foreman, NA. Rankin, John Langdon, John Brown, R.N. Allen, M. Armsby, W.Y. Henry, J.D. Cunningham, Henry McAdams, George Babcock, John H. Frymire, R.H. Henry.

        Those who testified were Hiram Baldwin, Robert Holloway, Albert Lamphere, James Crozier and Dr. Young. Verdict was self-defense and Crozier was discharged. On the advice of friends, he immediately left town. {The issue of December 12 reported Wm. Fleming, the father, was present.”)

Died at his residence one mile east of Berwick on 6th December of typhoid fever, which continued 33 days, Mr. Benson Fordyce, aged about 30. Mr. F. was born in southwestern part of Pennsylvania and came to this county last spring, soon after which he married Miss Sharpnack, also of Pennsylvania.
