January 19

Two cases of small pox have been brought from Galesburg - one a son of J.C. Morgan, Esq. and the other an adult at the house of Mr. Look in the same part of the city. A child has also died.

 

January 26

The two cases reported above must have been extremely mild as they are recovering. The child who died was in the family of Mr. Carr, lately emigrated from Pennsylvania.

 

February 2

Another case of small pox at the American House in the city last week. The patient was removed to the southwest part of town where a house was provided.

 

Mr. Thos McBride was injured in a hunting accident on Thur. 26th ult. and is recovering.

Died in Knoxville on 24th of inflammation of the bowels, Mr. Edmund B. Kellogg, engineer of the Peoria and Oquawka RR, aged 30 years. He was educated at Norwich University, emigrated to California after the discovery of gold, was elected a member of the first Legislature and was afterwards appointed Surveyor General. Died at the Emrick House in this city on Tues. morning last, Dr. D.H. Kaylor. He was from Ohio and had resided in town but a few weeks. It is believed he died from an affection of the heart. He was buried with Masonic honors. We learn that his wife was planning to join him in his new abode.

Died at his son's residence in Ellisville on the 17th March of dropsy, Levi B. Ellis, aged 68y. Mr. E. was one of the early settlers of this place.

 

Died at Peoria on 6th inst., Rev. Addison Coffey. Mr. Coffey's death cast a gloom over a large circle of friends in that city.

 

Died near Greenbush on April 3rd, Mrs. Elizabeth Pierce, w/o Mr. Stephen Pierce, aged 26 years.

 

Died near Greenbush on April 5th, of typhoid fever, Mary Ellen, oldest daughter of Susan and Walter Johnson, aged 15 years. Eulogy.

Died at the residence of her son, Mr. John S. Rude, of Knoxville, Knox Co., on 9 of the April after a severe illness of five days, Mrs. Rebecca Rude, aged 64y, 10m, 5d. Eulogy.

Details of escape of David B. Stoddard from jail at Knox Co. He is accused of the murder of his wife in Rock Island. Now incarcerated at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa.

June 7

June 15

The dwelling house of Mr. Rtu. Talbot, a worthy farmer residing near New Lancaster, in the county, was entirely destroyed by fire on the 8th inst. It is supposed to have caught from the stove-pipe.

 

Stoddard, the murderer now confined in jail in this city, succeeded in getting off his irons last night. A heavier set were immediately forged and put on him. When questioned about his former irons he replied that the rats had gnawed them off and carried than away and he knew nothing about it. Rock Island Daily Advertiser

 

June 22

Mr. C.B. Matthews of Oquawka fell from a chair, while in a standing position a few days since and fell upon the pavement, by which his thigh bone was broken. Dr. Murry, who happened to be on the spot, gave the patient chloroform and set the broken limb immediately.

 

Died on 22d ult., 4 miles southwest of Monmouth, of scarlet fever, Margaret Martin, aged 22 years.

 

 

 

June 29

David Stoddard was convicted of willful murder of his wife, from whom he was separated for some years, with an axe; sentenced to be hanged July 13 next.

Died here on 27th inst. Julia Belinda, daughter of John and Ann Thonpson, aged 13 months.

 

July 6

The residence of Mr. Harvey Pitman, two and a half miles from Keithsburg was entirely consumed by fire on 28th inst.

 

On Monday last, Frank Bryon, age 2y, 8m, son of Mr. Michner, living 3 miles south of town came to his death when he fell and was struck by stone pavement.

Mrs. Morton, wife of John T. Morton, Esq., editor of the Quincy Whig and formerly a citizen of Mt. Pleasant, died in Quincy a few days since.

July 20

Died on 9th inst., at his residence in Henderson Co., Mr. Samuel McDill, Jr. aged 35 years. Also, died on 13th inst. Martha S.J. daughter of above, aged 2 years.

 

The partnership of F.K. Smith and J.B. Martin dissolved by mutual consent.

 

July 27

Jacob D. Speck, Lewis L. Speck and Cornelius Speck, all residents of the northern part of Henderson Co. were arrested for passing counterfeit bills in Monmouth. They have been committed to prison. The following person deserve thanks for prompt and efficient aid they rendered in arresting the persons: Chas. Armsby, E. Nye, B.F. Foot and Dan'1 Eilenberger.

 

James T. Phillips, a carpenter, was instantly killed at the Baptist Church “yesterday” when he fell from a 12 foot scaffolding. He leaves a wife and three children. Fourdney and Winters mentioned. [Burlington Hawk-Eye Telegraph]

 

S.R. Moore, residing near Cameron, was accidently shot on 16th inst. by a firearm he was carrying. He was assisted by B.F. Wilson from a meadow nearby. Dr. Marshal called Dr. Rice of Monmouth and both aided the victim. Submitted by J.C. Seaton. (Detailed story)

Died at Galesburg on 27th of jaundice, Capt. Peter Mauck, aged 83. Capt. Mauck was one of the early settlers of Warren Co., having emigrated from Brackenridge[sic] Co. KY in '36. He took up residence 7 miles north east of Monmouth where he lived until last spring, when he moved to Galesburg and took up residence with his son-in-law. He was a native of Virginia and died as he lived, respected by a large circle of friends.

 

August 10

August 17

A horse thief named Proctor, was arrested a few days ago at Warren, Henderson Co.

 

Two citizens of this city have died suddenly during the present week, viz: Mr. Alfred Randall, formerly from Ohio, and Daniel E. Brown, a cooper. Their disease was diarreoea[sic], brought on by imprudence.

Died in Dallas City, IL. John Aklers, aged 27.

 

Died on 3-- ult. near Warren, IL. Bethan-- Carter, relict of the late Henry Carter, aged 68 years.

 

 

 

 

August 24

The Rev. Mr. Clark, a minister of the Seceder denomination, residing about four miles from Le Clair, in Scott Co., Iowa was struck by lightning and killed a few days since.

Died on 13th inst., 3 miles west of Berwick in Warren Co. of typhoid fever, Jacob Adkins, aged 12 years; also on 20th, Mrs. Jane Adkins, aged 32, the former a son and the latter the wife of Mr. Wm. Adkins, who removed from Brown Co., Indiana, only a few weeks since. Mr. Adkins has several relatives in the state of Illinois whose place of residence is unknown. He is a son of Mr. Roland Adkins.

 

Died in this city on 18th inst., George C. only son of Thomas G. and Celia B. Ashby.

 

August 31

Died in this city on 28th inst. of flux, Mrs. Louisa w/o Samuel T. Wells, aged 26 years.

 

Died at Cameron on the railroad, 6 miles east of this place, August 28th, Barton S. Parker, an old citizen of Warren Co.

 

September 7

James Thom attempted to rob Mr. Benjamin Stephens of Rock Island, on his way to Red Wing, but was thwarted in the attempt and arrested. Details.

From the Knoxville Journal: Coroner's Inquest on body of drowned child at Cherry Grove. Those testifying were Mrs. Salina Beard, Misses M.O. Lee, E. Latimer and M.E. McCoy. They found the body of the female child one-half mile south of residence of John Beard; ruled it came to its death by unlawful means. Jury: E.P. Dunlap, Foreman, Wm. Kays, Sr., Wm. A. Kays, Thomas Neel, J.A. Latimer, Elik Butler, A.G. Lee, J.W. Beard, Samuel H. Beard, J.M. Downs, John Beard and B.T. Woolsey. The child's clothing is in the keeping of P.M. Shoup.

Died in Abingdon, Knox Co. on 8th of November in the 21st year of her age, Paradine M. Jones, daughter of Rider John Jones of Warren Co. Ill. She became a member of the Union Baptist in October 1851, but at the time of her death, was a member of the Roseville Church. Her disease was typhoid fever. She is mourned by her mother, father, sisters and brothers. Resolutions were read at the Parthenian Society at Abingdon College.

 

November 23

Sanple R. Moore thanked kind friends who offered to watch over the cradle of his dying chil. (also called a dying orphan).

 

Mr. James C. Morgan thanked citizens for helping extinguish the fire which broke out in his home on Wed. morning last.

 

Died in Monmouth on 9th inst., Paschal T. Haley son of late Henry Haley, in the 20th year of his age.

 

Died in Monmouth at the home of A. Bunket on 16th inst. of Congestive fever, Lina Bell, infant d/o Sample R. Moore, aged 3 months.
