ANDERSON OF ST CLAIR, CLAY AND HENRY COUNTIES

Widow Nancy Anderson and the young men likely to be her sons—Robert and James. First, there are a number of Anderson families in Rives County in 1840, but only Nancy had a young male who was not head of household. Nancy Anderson was enumerated on p. 367 with 1 male 5‑10, 2 males 20‑30, 2 females under 5, 1 female 20‑30 and 1 female 60‑70. If Walter and his new bride were living with Nancy, they could be the 20‑30 year olds there.

Nancy Anderson lived in the part of Rives that became St. Clair in 1841 and her neighbors included Joshua and Jonas Caton, residents of St. Clair. This Nancy is probably the widow of one James Anderson who died in Henry County prior to 8 May 1838 when Robert and Nancy became administrators. The History of Henry and St. Clair Counties tell us that James Anderson, Rev. Thomas Keeney and Whit Mulholland (probably Whitmel Holland although it could be a mistake for Edward Mulholland) came to Bethlehem Township in the southeast part of Henry County about 1836.

In February of 1840, Nancy and Robert requested that the probate transcript for James Anderson, deceased, be transferred to St. Clair.2 At the same time, Robert paid Jesse Applegate's demands on the estate.3 Jesse Applegate then became administrator of the estate followed by Daniel Briggs. Although there is no record of Nancy selling property, the two young men suspected of being her sons, sold property near Walter's land entry.

Robert Anderson entered 73.40 acres at the Springfield office at the same time as Walter, although about eleven miles away. His entry was in 30‑38‑26. Soon afterward, he made another entry of 80 acres in adjoining 19‑38‑26. One Ambrose Anderson entered in the adjoining parcel of 25‑38‑27 at the same time. At that time, most of this land in townships 37 and 38 was demanded. Ambrose and Middleton Anderson then entered over 100 acres in 6‑37‑27. This placed them approximately one mile from Walter! Therefore, it seems likely all of these men are connected and lived briefly in Henry County. Ambrose was 50‑60 years old and thus a contemporary of widow Nancy.

However, most did not stay long in their new home. The first to sell was Robert and Elvira, who on 16 December 1839 for $100 sold the west half of the NW of 4‑40‑26 containing 80.23 acres. (Henry Co. C:270). Just a few months later, James Anderson with wife Elizabeth, sold to John Everitt, Jr., on 24 March 1840, the NE of NE of 25‑40‑27 containing 40 acres of land entered at Springfield. (Henry Co. B:163).

From Book D, pp. 591/ 592:
Deed 5 Nov. 1849, from George Anderson and wife Mary Jane, to Harvey Maxwell, both of Pettis Co., MO, for the sum of $16, all title & interest in the following land previously owned by William Anderson, deceased, & described as follows: West 1/2 of Northeast 1/4, and East 1/2 of Northwest 1/4, of Section 15, Twp. 46, Range 21, containing 160 acres; being the undivided interest of said George Anderson, James Anderson, John R. George & Mary Jane Anderson appeared 28 Dec. 1849 before John H. Henderson, J.P.
Filed for Record 1 Jan. 1850.
(That is to say, the children of the late William Anderson are selling William’s land inherited from his father, James.)

So of the 14 heirs of James H. Anderson, we now can count 1) son Ambrose who sold his share to brother  Robert 2) son Robert who sold his &  Ambrose’s shares to Harvey Maxwell 3) son John who sold his share to Harvey Maxwell 4) son Middleton ditto 5) daughter Ann, married to Joseph Potter, ditto 6) daughter Susannah, married to Light Revis, ditto 7) daughter Nancy, married to John Potter , ditto 8) daughter Sarah, married to David Collins, ditto 9) daughter Rebecca, ditto 10) son George, ditto 11) son William, deceased, through his children, ditto.

(We finally get the proof that John Potter, who is alongside his brothers-in-law  on the 1830 & 1840 MO censuses, is, in fact, married to Nancy Anderson, daughter of James H. Anderson.)

In 1845, James H. Anderson’s wife, Nancy, dies intestate, and her estate is divided among her 11 children.( We don’t see John Potter mentioned, as he has already left for California.)
