Lawrence Rains was born 1 January 1790 in Randolph County, North Carolina. His wife is unknown as is his date of death.  

            At least three children of Lawrence Rains, Sr. of Hocking County, Ohio came to Polk County, Missouri before 1840. Only Lawrence purchased land from the federal land office in time to be included in this study.  Lawrence Sr. and his reputed wife Ann Means were living in Ross County, Ohio at the time he made his will, but it is recorded in the adjoining county of Hocking. On 1 May 1817 the will first named beloved wife Ann who was to have the quarter section of land on which he lived and also six acres adjoining deeded by Eli Vanderford.  He named two youngest sons Nashaw? [should be Nathan] and Benjamin to equally divide the property after his wife's death.  He had already given his two eldest sons, Isaac and Lawrence their full part.  He also gave to John Raines, his son, a certain tract of land deed by Wm. Gregg.  He also named daughters, Hannah Cox, Ruth Dixon, Catharine Moffitt and daughter Ann Comer.  Wife Ann was made guardian of daughter, Rebecca Raines and two youngest sons, Nathan and Benjamin.  Son Isaac and John were appointed Executors.  The witnesses were John Ratcliff, Eli Vanderford and Jacob Cox.[1] Date of proving?? Seems to be after 1820. 

            In 1820, Lawrence Raines, Sr. was listed in Hocking County, Eagle Twp. p. 66 with 1 male under 10, [Benjamin] 1 male 10-16, [Nathan] 1 male 16-18, 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45; 1 female 16-26, 1 female over 45.  

            Between the time he was named in his father's will and his appearance on the 1840 census in Polk County, Missouri, Lawrence Rains has not been located.  In 1840, he was living in Johnson twp. and listed on p. 163 with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 50-60; 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 20-30.  Strangely he was not on the 1841 tax list, but he may have temporarily left the area. He had returned by 1844 when he was listed with the two parcels of land in this study, two horses, two cows and a clock. He did not pay a poll. His son, Lawrence, was probably living with him as he was next to him on the tax list, but owned no real property.  Lawrence Rains, Sr. retained the land in 1848. 

            Children of Lawrence Rains, by an unknown wife:

            i.          Nathan Rains b. 2 January 1809 in Ross county, Ohio.[2] d. intestate before 16 November 1848 in Taos, New Mexico.  His father-in-law, Judge Human, was the Administrator of the estate. m. in Polk County, 7 July 1840 Betsey Ann Human.  Nathan Rains was a Major in the 2nd Battalion of the 47th Rgt of Missouri Militia and was court martialed in Polk County in the spring of 1843 for improper conduct in office.  He was found guilty of calling out the militia in a time of peace.  Recordings of the procedure can be found in Polk County Circuit Court Book A. He served in the 3rd Rgt. of the Missouri Mounted Volunteers in the Mexican War and was ambushed by the enemy. 

                                    James G. Human, Administrator of Nathan Rains vs. Jacob Coons.  On 15 March 1851, it was reported to the Circuit Court by the witness Peyton Bristow that the parties concerned met before the justice of the peace on 23 November 1850 and 6 December 1850. The defendant, by his agent, Wm. F. Rogers stated that a final settlement had been made between himself and Nathan Rains in “Newmexico” in the lifetime of Rains. This agreement was proved by Mr. Prichard and Mr. Gash and all things being considered it is the recommendation of the Justice of the Peace that defendant recover from the plaintiff cost of suit at 45 cents.
