Descendants of William J. Meadows have linked him to one William Meadows and wife Sally living in Whitley County, Kentucky. They believe he left Whitley Co. with his wife and children first moving to Polk County, Missouri, about 1838 and then Crawford County, Arkansas. They link the William and Thomas of Arkansas with the same men of the name in Whitley County and with one Horatio Creekmore of the same place. The man in Whitley County married there, on 23 October 1823, one Sarah Harmon. Since the man in Arkansas had a wife named Sarah, this seemed possible.

Nevertheless, there remain irreconcilable problems with this linkage. First, the original marriage record indicates that the William Meadows who married Sarah Harmon in Whitley County had a first initial of "T," not "J" as indicated on the IGI. The marriage record indicates that the father of the bride was Valentine Meadors. To further complicate matters, two women named Sally Meadors were living in households in Whitley County in 1850. One was a widow, age 50 with a number of children still in her household and a Valentine, age 26, living next door. The printed census suggests that she is Sally Harmon, widow of William. If so, this means that she named her eldest son after her father which is common. Interestingly, all of her children from 1824 to 1847 were born in Tennessee.

Mary Avilla Abel of Crawford County AR interests says that Sarah Elizabeth Meadors was b. 15 March 1838 d/o Jacob M. and Jane W. Harman Meadors m. (1) her cousin William J. Meadors, a son of Thomas J. Meadors. This younger William J. Meadors d. April of 1864. Sarah Elizabeth Meadors m. (2) 7 July 1867 John Calhoun Rogers.

John and Delilah (Jones) Meadows of Whitley Co. Kentucky supposedly had: (Family records in possession of Mrs. Anna Mae Bowman of Oklahoma City.)

i. William J. Meadows m. 1823 Sarah Harman

ii. Jacob M. Meadows m. 16 April 1821 in Whitley County Jane Harman—to Crawford Co. 1851.

iii. Thomas J. Meadows

iv. Lurany Meadows m. 16 March 1821 in Whitley County Horatio Gates Creekmore.

Creekmore’s buried in Pope Cemetery, Graphic (15 mi NE of Van Buren) Crawford County.

John M. Creekmore b. 28 Oct. 1834 d. 22 Feb. 1891

Nancy b. 12 Aug. 1840 d. 13 Oct. 1913

Evan Creekmore b. 24 March 1835 d. 15 July 1915.

David H. Creekmore was b. 1817 in Abingdon, VA fifth child of Ballantin and Mray (Brown) Creekmore. Two years later the family moved to Whitley Co. Kentucky. In his manhood, he moved to Scott Co. Tennessee where his mother died. m. 1843 in Whitley Co. Elizabeth d/o John Meadors. She d. 1866 in Crawford Co. Arkansas.

Given the possibility of three men named William Meadows with wives named Sally living in Whitley County, the records most likely to reveal the situation would be the tax rolls.

A William Meadows first appears on the rolls in Whitley County in 1823 with no land, but paying a poll. He is between a John and Jacob Meadors who each owned 50 acres—the former on the R. Bird Creek and the other on the Cumberland River.

In 1826, a William T. Meadors appeared with 50 acres on Jellico that had been entered by N. Burnett (poll). [This man thus born ca. 1805] Another William Meaders also paid taxes on 50 acres on S. Creek and for a poll and three horses.

In 1827 the Whitley County tax rolls show a William Meadows with 50 acres on Red Creek entered by J. Meadows. This same William also owned 50 acres on Cumberland entered by T. Meadows. No other William was listed and this William appeared to live on the first parcel as that is where the poll was paid.

In 1828 William Meadows was listed with 100 acres on the Cumberland that he had entered.

There was also a William T. Meadows with 50 acres on Jellico entered by N. Barnett.

In 1829 one William Meadows had 100 acres on Red Bird Creek

Sally Meadows had 100 acres on Beck’s Creek that had been entered by Meadows. However, she did not appear as head of household in 1830.

1830 indicated just one William Meadors with 100 acres on the Cumberland River!

No other men named William Meadors and William Meadows appear afterward!

All deeds pertaining to men named William Meadows/Meadors were examined. None for William J. until the 20th century. Whitley Co. Kentucky Tax Rolls
